Choosing Abundance
By Bill Stimpson

Abundance has been a hot topic for Michelle and me throughout the past year. We've discovered an amazing correlation between what we believe about abundance and scarcity (its opposite)… and the results we experience in our life.

In its most simple definition, abundance means "plenty," while scarcity implies "lacking." Wouldn't we all choose abundance versus the alternative, given the choice? Having enough is obviously much more pleasant than not having enough. Unfortunately, we often make it more complicated than a simple choice, but I would like to argue the power in making it a choice.

It seems interesting to me that people who see abundance in their lives tend to believe that it's a choice, while those that feel they don't have enough seem to think there's no choice involved. It's the old battle between the have's and the have-not's, with the have-not's claiming injustice. But
one of the great lessons that humanity is beginning to understand, is that we have much more

control over our lives than we previously thought. We're learning that there's a definite connection between what we believe and think about, to what we actually experience in our lives. Thought creates reality. What you think about becomes real. Those of us who believe that there's not enough to go around, will create a world of scarcity for ourselves. Those of us who believe there is more than enough for everyone, will have a life filled with abundance. Whatever you believe to be true, will become true for you.

The bonus is that God (substitute "Universe" or "Source" here if you wish) is more than happy to provide us with not only our needs, but more. God wants us to be happy, not suffer. So when we choose scarcity, we're not only making ourselves miserable, but we're defying our creator at the same time. Many people confuse abundance with greed and excess, thinking that abundance is being selfish. I can assure you this is not true. Actually, abundance is more about sharing than being selfish. God is all about abundance, and abundance is good.

I completely understand the difficulty of believing in an abundant world when reading the news headlines or witnessing the massive poverty throughout the world. But trying to change the world before changing ourselves will only lead to anxiety and frustration. When we truly adopt abundance in our own life, then everything else seems to fall in place. We tend to see beauty where we used to see flaws. We see love where we used to see hate. We experience happiness where we used to be sad. We experience clarity where there used to be fog. But most importantly, we see opportunities where we used to see limitations. Thinking in abundant terms really is that powerful. I've witnessed the power of abundant thinking firsthand, after adopting it myself.

What can you do to attract abundance into your life?

Here are some recommendations:

First, understand your current beliefs about abundance. What do you believe to be true about the world? Be honest. Once you understand your current beliefs, then you'll have a firm understanding of any potential obstacles. Our beliefs, conscious and unconscious, are by far our biggest obstacles. Do you believe you deserve abundance? Saying 'yes' to this question is a major challenge for many people.

Define specifically what abundance means to you. Does it mean health? Wealth? Love? Peace? Be very clear on your definition. No one can help you if you don't know exactly what you want, and God doesn't understand ambiguity either. Trust yourself to know exactly what you truly need in life.

Claim abundance in your life. Do whatever you need to make this claim. Have a ceremony. Send an email to everyone you know. Do whatever it takes to cement this new way of thinking into your life.

Ask for help. Use your current belief structure. Pray, meditate, reach out. Whatever you need to do, do it. Whatever you want to ask for, ask for it. Don't be shy. Confidence is required.

Regularly reinforce your new beliefs. Affirmations are an amazing tool that not only help us change our old, unhealthy beliefs, but also help put abundant thoughts in our heads on a regular basis. Be sure to use positive affirmations ("I am thin and happy" instead of "I need to lose weight"). Using the present tense for your affirmations makes them real.

The final recommendation, once again, is to watch the movie "The Secret." In 90 minutes, you'll come to understand what might otherwise take years.

A world filled with abundance is a beautiful thing. The only way for it to happen, though, is for each of us to do our part.
